Oils

Massaging the affected are with oils can help reduce the appearance of stretch marks. Keep your skin moisturized well during the pregnancy, starting from 2nd trimester onwards. This will help prevent the formation of those thin fine lines as you will keep the skin well hydrated. However, if scars do get formed you can try applying any of the below mentioned oils.

Olive oil

It moisturizes the skin and improves blood circulation, thereby gradually causing a reduction in the stretch marks. Apart from the presence of vitamin A and E, which help in nourishing the skin layers, it is also rich in antioxidants which help remove free radicals found in the body, that damage collagen causing fine lines, wrinkles and dryness. You can massage slightly warm olive oil on stretch marks; let it remain for 30 minutes followed by a bath. Alternately, you can massage with a mixture of olive oil, vinegar and water and leave it overnight for effective results.

Castor oil

Massage castor oil on the affected area using circular motions for 5-10 minutes. Wrap a thin cotton cloth around the area, and apply some heat using either a heating pad or a hot water bottle for around 30 minutes, so that the oil is absorbed well into the area. Repeat daily for best results.

Other oils

Various other oils such as almond, avocado, coconut, vitamin E oils can also be used in equal proportions to reduce stretch marks and scars. Massage the stretch marks or scars containing area with oils for about 20-30 minutes daily, 2-3 times a day. You can add one of the many essential oils for this purpose like lavender, rose, geranium, chamomile, myrrh etc. Mix ½ teaspoon each of chamomile and lavender oils with 2 teaspoons of almond oil. Apply this mixture on the stretch marks, daily, 3-4 times a day.

Coconut oil is rich in vitamin E as well as antioxidants. The capric, caprylic and Lauric acids present in it help promote collagen production, thereby reducing scars and stretch marks. Massage warm coconut oil for 5-10 minutes on the affected area, and leave it for an hour or two. Repeat 2-4 times daily for best results.

Mix 1 tablespoon each of wheat germ oil and calendula oil and massage it on the affected area. Continuous use leads to lightening of stretch marks.

Tea tree oil

It is known to possess antiviral, antibiotic and anti-inflammatory properties, and is extensively used to treat various skin related problems. Mix 2-3 drops of tea tree oil to 1 teaspoon of almond oil, rub it on scars; leave it for 30 minutes and wash off with warm water. Use daily for better results.

Sugar

Mix 1 tablespoon of sugar with a few drops of almond oil and lemon juice, and apply this mixture on stretch marks. Rub it for 8-10 minutes and then wash it off. Continue this exfoliation technique daily for a month or till the scars fade off.

Potato juice

Potatoes also possess antioxidant properties, which help in preventing damages caused by free radicals as well as stimulate restoration and skin cell growth. Cut potato slices; rub them directly on your stretch marks and wash it off with lukewarm water, after the juice has dried.

Water

Water carries oxygen and nutrients to different parts of the body. Drinking adequate amount of water keeps your skin hydrated and supples, lending it elasticity. Drink a minimum of 8-10 glasses of water daily to detox your skin pores and to get rid of your stretch marks.

Aloe vera

It is found in most scar removing commercial products available in the market. The gel present in the leaves contains plant collagen, which helps repair our skin and restores its elasticity. Directly rub aloe vera gel obtained from its succulent leaves on your stretch marks; leave it for 15 minutes and then wash off with lukewarm water. You can also prepare a mixture of ¼cup of aloe vera gel, oil from 10 vitamin E and 5 vitamin A capsules and apply it on skin suing circular motions. Repeat daily for best results.

Lemon juice

It is rich in antioxidants (AHA) and vitamin C which helps remove dead skin, reduce tan and helps in production of collagen, thus helping in lightening stretch marks. Rub lemon halves on stretch marks in circular motions; leave it for 10 minutes and wash it off with warm water. You can also mix equal quantities of other juices (cucumber/potato/tomato) and lemon juice and apply it on stretch marks.

You can also mix 1-2 drops of glycerine to lemon juice, and apply it twice a day on the stretch marks. The presence of glycerine keeps the skin moisturized, whereas the lemon acts as bleach reducing the blemishes on a regular basis.

Cocoa butter

It has anti-ageing and anti-wrinkle properties, enhances blood circulation thereby reducing stretch marks. Cocoa butter can be used to prepare a stretch marks removal cream at home, by mixing it with shea butter and vitamin E oil. It moisturizes deep and fast, thus repairing the skin problems. Shea butter melts at room temperature and is therefore easily absorbed by the skin.

Along with vitamin E, it helps heal and remove the scars. Mix 2 teaspoons each of cocoa butter and shea butter melt them and add 1 teaspoon of vitamin E oil to it. You can store this in a container after properly mixing the ingredients. The cream solidifies after it cools down. Apply this cream 2 times a day after having a bath to reduce your stretch marks.

You can also prepare a mixture of ½ cup cocoa butter, 1 tablespoon wheat germ oil, 1 teaspoon tea kernel oil, 2 teaspoons grated beeswax and vitamin E oil. Heat this till wax melts and mix properly, store in an air tight box after cooling. Apply 2-3 times a day for reduction in scars and stretch marks.

Alfalfa

It is rich in vitamins (K & E) and amino acids. Rinse off after 5 minutes and pat dry. Now apply coconut water on your skin and allow it to dry. Then apply aloe vera gel or shea butter to that area. Rinse after some time and then apply moisturizer. Repeat 3 times a week to reduce and lighten your stretch marks.
