Over exposure of skin to harmful UV rays often not just lends a tan to your face and other exposed body parts but also causes the appearance of brown spots or dark spots. They are formed due to excessive production of melanin by specialized skin cells known as melanocytes. Though they are harmless in nature but excessive brown spots on your face make you conscious when someone else points them. Apart from sun rays, other factors which may cause the appearance of these brown spots on the exposed parts of your skin like face, neck, shoulders, back and hands are stress, vitamin deficiency, ageing and a weak liver. You can easily get rid of these unwanted dark spots by using natural home remedies.
Lemon based cream
Rich in vitamin C, lemon has bleaching properties which not only help lighten your skin tone but also remove those brown spots that have been troubling you. Plus, it helps maintain soft, clear and beautiful skin. You can prepare a cream by mixing 1 tsp of turmeric along with 3 tsp of lemon juice and apply it to brown spots. Wash it off with water after 30 minutes. Alternately, you can use a mixture of 4 tsp lemon juice and juice of 2 tomatoes over brown spots. Wash it off after 30 minutes. However, care must be taken not to venture out in the sun after using lemon juice on your face.
You can also use lemon juice directly, or mixed with rose water to tone down its acidic content or prepare a scrub using it. Lemon juice can be applied directly on the area; left for 30 minutes and then rinsed off using cold water. Repeat this process twice daily for better results. Dilute lemon juice with rose water or honey if you have a sensitive skin. You can prepare a scrub using lemon juice and sugar and rub it on your dark spots. Rinse it off after 5-10 minutes and repeat the process 3-4 times a week. You can add olive oil to this mixture too.
Buttermilk and yogurt cream
Buttermilk and yogurt both are formed from curd which is rich in lactic acid and works wonders for the skin. You can prepare a cream using either of these ingredients. Apply a mixture of buttermilk and lemon juice using cotton ball over brown spots and wash it off after a few minutes. You can also use a paste of 4 tsp buttermilk and 2 tsp tomato juice over the affected area.
Make a pack using 2 tbsp of oatmeal, 1 tbsp plain yogurt and 1 tsp fresh lemon juice and apply it on the brown spot area. Wash with cold water after 30 minutes and apply moisturizer. Repeat once a day for a couple of weeks and then twice a week for best results. You can also prepare a paste by mixing 2 tsp gram flour (chickpea flour), 1 tsp milk or curd (for dry skin), juice of ½ lemon, 1 tsp tomato juice, 2 pinches turmeric and rose water. Apply this paste on the dark spots and keep it till it dries. Using few drops of oil (almond or castor) gently scrub off the paste and then rub the area with lemon rind soaked in rose water finishing it off by wash it with water. Repeat the process once or twice a day and then a few times a week and see the results for yourself.
Onion based cream
Using onion on your face might make you squirm as you normally wouldn’t want to use something that pungent on your face. However, it is an excellent remedy for hair growth as well as removing dark spots on skin. It is acidic in nature and acts as a bleaching agent lightening the skin tone and those brown spots. You can make a cream by mixing 1 tbsp onion juice with 2 tbsp honey and applying it on your dark spots. Leave it for 20 minutes and wash it off properly to remove the pungent odour of onion. Regular application will reduce the brown spots along with lightening your skin tone.
Fruit based creams
Papain enzyme present in the yellow fruit papaya helps reduce skin tan, blemishes, acne and other dark spots. Make a paste using mashed papaya slices to obtain its pulp and apply it directly on dark spots and leave it for 20 minutes and then rinse off. Use this treatment twice daily to lighten the dark spots.
Another fruit which can be used to prepare a homemade cream for treating brown spots is tomato. Tomato posses bleaching properties due to its acidic nature and can therefore work wonders for those brown spots present on your skin. Mash tomatoes to make a paste, add some lemon juice to it to prepare a paste. Apply it on your face using cotton ball and clean after some time.
Castor oil and sugar cream
Castor oil is a wonderful remedy for a lot of problems- hair growth, skin problems etc. Sugar cubes work as an excellent exfoliator and remove dead skin cells leaving you with a healthy glowing complexion. We can use these ingredients together to form a gentle exfoliating cream which lightens your brown spots. Mix these two ingredients together to form a paste and apply it on your dark spots. Daily application will help reduce them dramatically. With regular use it helps in removing brown spots completely.

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) based cream
ACV is rich in acetic acid and helps in treatment of various skin problems. You can use ACV to prepare a homemade anti-brown spots cream by mixing it with other naturally available ingredients like orange juice, olive oil etc. You can prepare a nourishing skin lightening cream by mixing some honey with ACV to leave your skin moisturized. You can also mix ½ tsp ACV in a few tbsp of orange juice. Apply it on the brown spots and wash it off after it has dried. Repeat it once or twice daily for better results. Dilute ACV with water in 1:1 ratio and apply it on brown spots and wash it off after a few minutes. ACV may cause slight stinging or burning so always ensure that you use it in diluted form. You can use a mixture of equal quantities of olive oil and vinegar on your face and wash it off after 30 minutes. It is an effective remedy for skin problems.
It has anti-ageing and antiseptic properties apart from skin lightening ones. Make a sandalwood cream at home using 2 tbsp sandalwood powder, 1 tbsp orange juice, 1 tsp of lemon juice and 2 vitamin E capsules. Mix all ingredients together and apply it on the dark spots. Wash it off after 30 minutes. Massaging the area with a few drops of sandalwood oil mixed in either almond or olive oil and leave it overnight for best results.
You can also use it to prepare face mask by mixing 2 tbsp sandalwood powder, 2 tsp of rose water and 1 tsp each of lemon juice and glycerine. Apply this on the affected area and let it dry. Wash it off using cold water.
The main ingredient of this herbal cream is horseradish which has been used in many concoctions for treating various skin problems and can also be used for removing brown spots. You can prepare a milk based cream using horseradish by soaking it in milk for 20-30 minutes and then using it on your age spots. The antioxidants of horseradish combine with the properties of milk to make your skin free of blemishes.
Alternately you can prepare herbed vinegar by soaking grated horseradish piece (4-5 inches long) in ½ cup of ACV. Keep this mixture for 2 weeks, mixing from time to time, strain it into a bottle after the required time and refrigerate it. Apply small amount of it on your dark spots and freckles thrice a day for at least a month to see the results. If however, you have skin irritation on topical application, discontinue the use as you may have a sensitive skin and end up with rashes.
Red currant based antioxidant cream
Prepare a cream by mashing ¼ cup unripe red currants and mix them with 1 tbsp honey. Apply it on brown spots. Wash it off with warm water after half an hour. Another recipe involves making a paste by mixing equal quantities of red currant, lemon, parsley and orange juice and applying it on brown spots; let it stay for 10-15 minutes and then rinse using warm water.
