Top 15 Natural Home Remedies for Oily Hair and Scalp


The most frustrating part is when the hair and scalp is oily and greasy, which makes it very difficult to style. Both men and women can suffer from excessive oil on the hair and scalp. Fuller’s earth (multani mitti)

Multani mitti can help to get rid of dandruff, remove oiliness from hair and also make the hair stronger and healthier. Soak 3 teaspoons of multani mitti and  2 teaspoons of soap nut powder and with a little bit of water to make a paste. Apply this paste on the hair and scalp and tie your hair up and secure it with a shower cap. Let the hair mask dry off completely and then rinse with warm water.

Baking soda


Just take a couple of spoons of baking powder in your palm and add a few drops of water and mix to make a paste. Apply this paste on the scalp and rinse it after 30 minutes. You can also mix this baking powder with your regular shampoo and wash it off.

Orange peel


Orange peel is packed with vitamin C, antioxidants and other vital nutrients that are effective in removing the greasiness from the hair and scalp. Grind a few peels of orange with a teaspoon of honey to make a paste. Apply this  into the scalp and  wash it with a mild shampoo after 30 minutes. You can even use dry orange peel powder for this remedy.

Lemon juice


The juice of lemon is acidic which helps to break down the oil cells on the scalp. Take the juice and mix it with a cup of water. Use this lemon water to rinse your hair after your regular shampooing and conditioning. You can even apply the lemon juice directly on the scalp and hair and rinse it with a mild shampoo after an hour.

Corn flour

This ingredient is a quick fix to get rid of oily hair when you have no time for hair wash. This wonderful ingredient is an excellent natural absorbent that can absorb the oil from the scalp. Just sprinkle a teaspoon of corn flour on the scalp and massage well for 10 minutes. Then just brush your hair gently for a few minutes till the flour is not visible on the hair.



Using henna on the hair will not just remove the oiliness, but it will also make the hair soft and shiny. Brew a cup of tea and strain it. Mix a couple of teaspoons of henna powder with the  tea liquor, make a paste and let it stay overnight. Apply this paste evenly on the hair and scalp and leave it for an hour or two. Wash it off using warm water and a mild shampoo.

Soap nut (reetha)

Soap nut is also one of the most effective ingredients to remove the oiliness from hair and scalp. Just soak a few soap nuts in a cup of water, overnight.  Massage the wet scalp and hair with this water and rinse if after 10 minutes. Don’t throw the previously soaked soap nuts, but place them in a different cup of water and use it for your next wash.

Apple cider vinegar

Mix one cup of apple cider vinegar with one cup of water and rinse the scalp and hair with this mix post shampooing. Do this 3-4 times a month for best results.


Beer is another great alternative to reduce the oiliness of the hair. Just massage your wet hair with beer and rinse it off with water. You can also make a beer hair mask by whisking one egg with 1oo ml of beer. Apply this mixture on the hair and rinse it off with a mild shampoo after 30 minutes.

Aloe Vera gel


You can directly apply pure Aloe Vera gel on the scalp and massage it for 10 minutes and rinse. You can even mix a tablespoon of Aloe gel with your regular shampoo as it will help to spread the shampoo evenly on the hair and remove the oiliness. Another remedy is mix 2 tablespoons of pure Aloe Vera gel with 2 tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice and massaging the scalp with this mixture. This can be rinsed off after 30 minutes with warm water.

Mint wash

Mint is known for its astringent properties that help to remove the oils secreted by the oil glands of the scalp. Boil a handful of mint leaves in ½ liter of water for about 20 minutes. Strain this mixture and use the liquid to wash your hair and scalp post shampooing.



Mash one ripe banana with a teaspoon of honey and apply is generously on the scalp and hair strands. Leave it for 30 minutes and wash it off with a mild shampoo. This mask provides natural conditioning to the hair, so no need to use a conditioner.

Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil helps to remove the excess oil, sebum and dirt blocking the pores of the scalp. Massage the scalp with a teaspoon of tea tree oil for 15 minutes and rinse it off with an herbal shampoo.
