What is dandruff? Dandruff is a condition of the hair or scalp rather, where the area becomes dry and itchy and skin is flaky around it. Dandruff as condition can be quite embarrassing, it can be usually found in people after puberty, due to hormonal changes, however it is not always true. It can rise or arise due to various other reasons as well.
This condition worsens during winter, when the skin dries up more and the scalp gets less of nourishment. Anyone suffering from dandruff hence has to take utmost care of his psychological and physical well-being.
Causes of dandruff:
Often people who have oily or dry skin are said to be prone to dandruff.
Lack of brushing hair, which means lack of blood circulation.
People who do not shampoo regularly often end up with dirty scalp which results into dandruff.
Side effect of certain medications.
Stress, one of the most prominent reasons for dandruff.
Allergies, many a times people consume a lot of drugs and medications which may give rise to allergies which in turn give rise to dandruff.
Every problem has a solution and so does this, there are lot of medical treatments available in the market but most of them are very expensive. Everyone may not be able to afford them. However, some remedies are available right here in the kitchen:
1 Apple Cider vinegar (ACV):
The ACV is a magical potion, it is one of the best natural remedy for dandruff. A mixture of warm water and apple cider vinegar in equal quantities will easily address the issue. ACV gets rid of the flake that causes dandruff also it is a natural antiseptic which kills the germs and bacteria present in the roots and stop the hair from being smelly. Once the liquid is poured, scrub it nicely and wash it only with water.
It also doubles up as a shampoo, Mix 2 tablespoons of ACV, Tea tree oil 1 tablespoon and ¼ cup of water. Dilute all the ingredients in a spray bottle and apply it as a shampoo which can be used twice a week.
Another ACV recipe which is a sure shot anti dandruff remedy mix water ¼ cup, jojoba (aroma) oil ½ cup, ACV 1 tablespoon, fresh apple juice 2 tablespoons and garlic cloves approximately 6. Remove it from the blender into a smooth paste and use it on wet hair like a shampoo. The hair will regain moisture and no longer be dry, which is the main cause of dandruff. This shampoo can be used twice a week for best results.
Epsom salt or the normal kitchen salt is a natural tool against dandruff. A Spoonful of salt should be rubbed at the roots on dry scalp for some time and should be washed off immediately. Salt helps in getting rid of the dead and oily skin, which causes dandruff. This may not be used on a regular basis as a shampoo but surely is the cheapest and easiest way to get rid of dandruff.

3 Cucumber and Lemon shampoo:
Blend a smooth paste of peeled lemon and cucumber in a blender and use it as a shampoo, apply generously and scrub well on the scalp, rinse well until all the remains are washed off. Lemon is rich in Vitamin C and it kills fungus which gives rise to dandruff, cucumber is a natural coolant and gives relief for the itchiness.
4 Baking Soda:
Baking soda helps clean the scalp and maintain the pH level of the hair at the desired 4.5 – 5.5 level. You can take 1 tablespoon of baking soda mix in 2 cups of water and apply generously over the scalp and use it like shampoo. Baking soda also works as a conditioner for the hair, smoothens the texture and gives it the softness.
5 Lemon and Aloe Vera shampoo:
Lemon and Aloe Vera both have medicinal properties and both are equally effective for fighting dandruff. It is a simple recipe of 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and 1 table spoon of Aloe Vera juice. This has to be mixed with a normal organic shampoo easily available and used regularly.
Avocado removes the excess oil from the hair, which gives rise to dandruff. Excess oil in the hair often results in hair becoming smelly and sticky which attract dust and pollution. 1 ripe Avocado, peeled, baking soda 2 teaspoons, lukewarm water ¼ cup, all this has to blend into a smooth paste. Apply it in place of the regular shampoo, the hair becomes naturally non greasy and easily manageable.
Shikakai has anti-inflammatory properties. Many a times due to excessive itching the skin breaks causing inflammation. In such situations the normal medicinal shampoos available in the market would cause a burning sensation. Shikakai and Reetha (Soap nuts) once applied will not burn, rather they soothe the skin and have fabulous results on hair.
Soak 100 grams Reetha overnight and blend the same with 2 tablespoons of Shikakai powder in the morning, apply the paste and rinse it well.
Shikakai and Fenugreek Shampoo:
Fenugreek is a natural conditioner which gives shine to the hair and Shikakai can treat skin ailments a mix of these ingredients can cause wonders.
500 grams Shikakai, 250 grams fenugreek, Green gram 250 grams, Curry leaves (one bunch), basil leaves (one bunch) sundry all the ingredients for 24 hours and later make a powder. This powder can be stored in an air tight jar for months, which can be used regularly after mixing with water for every wash.
These homemade remedies for dandruff are easy and simple to make and are extremely affordable. A must try for those of who believe in treating the hair naturally.
